Container virtualization app

Docker Hub is a development tool that allows users to create, manage, and deliver applications. System administrators use this lightweight container virtualization platform to execute apps in any environment from OS X and Windows to servers in the cloud or virtual machines. It is a large library and community for container images from software vendors, open-source projects, and more.

Build and share apps

Docker Hub works to provide a home for your applications. As noted, it allows applications written in any programming language to be executed in any environment. With this, you can seamlessly ship any application anywhere. You can push images and make your app accessible within the Docker community. This also makes it easier for you and your team to collaborate and create your apps. Developers can also use the app’s automated builds and webhooks for easy integration into their development pipeline.

This handy web-app tool simplifies and accelerates workflows while giving developers the freedom to innovate with their choice of tools, application stacks, and deployment environments of their projects. The app packages apps in containers that include all necessary resources for the program to run. Users must note, however, that a container is created from a read-only image with information about its content, configuration data, and the processes to be executed at launch.

However, while it seemed to be a convenient web development tool, using it comes with security risks. Recently, a company in the business of software container virtualization has analyzed the images in the app. In its report, it said that more than 30% of those images are highly susceptible to a variety of security attacks.  These are images that Docker users pushed without scrutiny from any authority. Users can prevent the risk of buggy packages by collaborating with security experts. However, not everybody has the means to do so.

Could use a better security framework

Docker Hub is a great tool for developers. With this app, users will have a convenient way to ship apps from one environment to another. However, pushing the apps you’ve written without help from security experts exposes you to online threats. The app needs to provide a better framework to counter this major flaw.

In Softonic we scan all the files hosted on our platform to assess and avoid any potential harm for your device. Our team performs checks each time a new file is uploaded and periodically reviews files to confirm or update their status. This comprehensive process allows us to set a status for any downloadable file as follows:

Clean

It’s extremely likely that this software program is clean.

What does this mean?

We have scanned the file and URLs associated with this software program in more than 50 of the world's leading antivirus services; no possible threat has been detected.

Warning

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.

We’d like to highlight that from time to time, we may miss a potentially malicious software program. To continue promising you a malware-free catalog of programs and apps, our team has integrated a Report Software feature in every catalog page that loops your feedback back to us.

Flag any particular issues you may encounter and Softonic will address those concerns as soon as possible.
